Your Charity Counts with Penny Appeal
Over the years, Yemen has experienced a protracted war and famine. As an unfortunate consequence of this situation, the country is going through one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Large scale population displacement, in concert with declining economic certainly and rising global inflation, have contributed to the people of Yemen being subjected to harsh and difficult living conditions through no fault of their own. Climate change driven events such as large scale drought, as well as natural disasters have only exacerbated the already dire situation faced by the population.

Yemen’s Crisis Situation
Yemen’s humanitarian crisis cannot be understated. For the past nine years, Yemen has been subjected to war and conflict with varying points of escalation. As a result, more than 20 million people are relying on humanitarian assistance from the international community. This accounts for two-thirds of Yemen’s entire population.
Food insecurity in Yemen remains a large concern. More than 17 million people face conditions of food insecurity. Access to regular meals is non-existent for a large part of the population at the moment and continues to be the case for the foreseeable future ahead. Malnutrition continues to be a concern for 1.3 million pregnant and breastfeeding women. Furthermore, a staggering 2.2 million children aged 5 and under require treatment for acute malnutrition. Millions are unable to meet minimum food and caloric intake and are on the brink of starvation. This is coupled with high global inflation and decreasing purchasing power, making food less affordable for those already facing poor job prospects and poverty.
Food insecurity concerns are further exacerbated by displacement of people due to a number of factors. Conflict and localised violence in the country has resulted in people being forced to move multiple times. Regional drought, flooding, and climate change factors have forced millions of people to shift to other areas of the country, putting a strain on already limited local resources.
Women and children bear the brunt of the consequences of migration. Inadequate medical facilities and educational institutions and overall economic collapse inside Yemen has had a disproportionate effect on women and children.
The lack of clean water and sanitation remains a grave concern. Close to 18 million people lack access to clean, safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. The incidence of waterborne and communicable diseases has become widespread. Yemen has seen an uptake in cases of dengue fever, polio, cholera, and diphtheria. Water infrastructure damaged by conflict or improper maintenance and upkeep due to dwindling funds, have compounded water insecurity concerns. The lack of sanitation pads and female hygiene products alongside water insecurity has only increased health problems for millions of young girls and women.
Your Yemen Donation Makes a Difference
Penny Appeal Canada has taken a multi-pronged approach to addressing the needs of the Yemeni people under challenging safety and bureaucratic situations. We have relied on your donations to work in concert with Yemen charity agencies and local partners to deliver aid and establish projects that address the needs of affected people.
Education
Conflict and continued disruption of schooling across the country and the fragmentation of the nearly collapsing education system have had a profound impact on the learning and overall cognitive, emotional development, and the mental health of all the 10.6 million school-age boys and girls in Yemen.
Penny Appeal’s Education First program is aiming to support 150 students in the Dar Saad district. This project aims to enrol children in public schools or alternative means and be provided with financial sponsorship grants as well as school supply grants. Providing a safe and dignified place to learn, and also easing financial burdens off families, is a step towards providing these children with a glimmer of hope for the future.
The scale of the education crisis is huge. That is why we urge you to donate to Yemen so that we can provide more students and their families with such opportunities.
Water Security
The spread of waterborne diseases in Yemen have put an already strained and barely functioning healthcare system under greater stress. Due to the lack of fuel and heavy restrictions on imports, water sources that rely on diesel (a common fuel agent for water pumps in Yemen) are no longer properly functional, leaving thousands of families with absolutely no source for water. In many areas, young girls and women are the primary fetchers of water and they travel several kilometres every day to bring water from far sources when the well is not functioning. These sources of water are often contaminated and cause more harm than good to the families.
Penny Appeal’s Thirst Relief program is working towards providing clean and safe access to drinking water. In Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, we are implementing a project that aims to rehabilitate water sources through the installation of water pumps and solar panels, and connecting these water sources to main water networks in the area. With an estimated 2,800 beneficiaries, this project will ensure residents in the immediate area, and surrounding areas that do not have working or compromised wells, will have access to clean drinking water.
When you donate to Yemen, you contribute immensely to these projects and keep them funded, continuing our commitment to beneficiaries.

Health Security
The state of healthcare in Yemen is dire. With many healthcare facilities underfunctioning with sparse resources, or not in operation at all, millions of people are unable to obtain proper care to address their health concerns. Women are especially vulnerable to inadequate access to healthcare. 5.2 million women needing health support, including 3.2 million who require access to medical, reproductive, and other health support. Nearly 1.1 million pregnant women need emergency obstetric care. Those suffering from chronic/non-communicable diseases are also vulnerable due to lack of medicines at primary care level, as well as rising prices due to the economic deterioration, currency depreciation and lack of disposable income.
Your donations to Yemen are working to establish two mobile health clinics Al Dhale. The aim of this project is to provide access to primary health support to more than 10,000 people in the conflict affected areas, who otherwise have limited to no access to health support. Penny Appeal is proud that this project falls in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Food Security
Yemen’s hunger crisis continues to be a cause for concern for millions of people. Brought on by years of conflict as well as floods and droughts induced by the climate crisis, food insecurity remains at an all time high. Malnutrition among pregnant and postpartum women, and children remain a grave cause for concern.
In Taiz, Penny Appeal’s Feed Our World program established the Yemen Bakery, a charitable bakery that provides food for 500 of the neediest families with bread every day. It also employs 11 young people experiencing difficult financial circumstances, providing them and their families with a steady income. The Bakery is also open to paying customers, working to stimulate the economy in the region.
Penny Appeal also distributes food packs during the month of Ramadan. For the entire month, 300 families get provisions of such items as flour, vegetables, sugar, rice, oats, dairy, and more, to begin and end their fast. 1,500 people directly benefit from this project every year. This project will continue to distribute food packs this coming Ramadan
