What’s happening
Jamaica has been impacted by what has been described as the strongest hurricane to ever hit the region. Winds of up to 295 km/h swept the region on October 26 bringing torrential rainfall. Buildings and homes have been severely damaged especially in the parish of St. Elizabeth where large-scale flooding has left communities underwater.
Climate scientists say the rise in global temperatures caused by humans has increased the intensity of storms around the world. Hurricane Melissa is the most powerful storm to hit Jamaica in nearly two centuries, leaving communities without power. The country’s healthcare system is on high alert as injuries come in and the risk of waterborne disease increases.
