Some acts of kindness help someone for a day. Others keep helping for years, sometimes for generations.

In Islam, there’s a special name for the second kind: Sadaqah Jariyah.

If you’ve ever wondered what is Sadaqah Jariyah, how it differs from everyday charity, and how to choose a cause that keeps giving, this guide is for you. We’ll explain the Sadaqah Jariyah meaning, share practical examples, and help you find giving opportunities that create lasting change.

What Is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah Jariyah is charity that continues to benefit people long after the original act of giving. Because the benefit keeps going, so does the reward.

The term comes from two Arabic words:

  • Sadaqah: voluntary charity, given sincerely for the sake of Allah
  • Jariyah: flowing, running or continuous, like water in a stream

Put together, the Sadaqah Jariyah meaning is “flowing charity.” It’s a gift that keeps moving forward, touching new lives over time.

The Hadith Behind Sadaqah

The foundation for Sadaqah Jariyah comes from a well-known hadith. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (Sahih Muslim 1631)

This hadith shows us something powerful. While most of our deeds stop at death, Sadaqah Jariyah does not. It remains a source of reward for as long as people continue to benefit.

The Meaning of Ongoing Charity in Islam

To understand the meaning of ongoing charity in Islam, it helps to look at the Qur’an’s view of lasting impact.

Allah says:

“Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind.” (Surah Ya-Sin, 36:12)

Scholars of tafsir explain that “what they left behind” includes the effects of a person’s actions after they are gone. That covers both good and bad. Sadaqah Jariyah is one of the clearest ways to leave behind good.

The Qur’an also describes how Allah multiplies charity:

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven ears; in each ear is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261)

Sadaqah Jariyah is that seed in action. One gift grows, spreads and keeps producing.

Sadaqah vs Sadaqah Jariyah: What’s the Difference?

All Sadaqah is valuable. Even a smile counts as charity, according to the Prophet (PBUH). But not all Sadaqah works the same way. Here’s a simple way to see the difference.

Immediate Sadaqah

Immediate Sadaqah meets a need right now. Its benefit is real and important, but it’s usually used up quickly.
Examples include:

  • Giving a meal to someone who is hungry
  • Donating emergency cash to a family in crisis
  • Providing a food pack during Ramadan
  • Helping a neighbour pay an urgent bill

    Sadaqah Jariyah

Sadaqah Jariyah creates something that keeps working. The benefit doesn’t end once it’s received.
    Examples include:

  • Building a water well that serves a village for years
  • Planting a fruit tree that feeds people and animals season after season
  • Funding a school where children learn year after year
  • Distributing copies of the Qur’an that are read again and again

A Quick Way to Tell Them Apart

Ask yourself one question: “Will this still be helping people next year?”

If the answer is yes, you’re likely looking at Sadaqah Jariyah.

Both types of giving matter. Emergencies need fast help, and Islam encourages us to respond. But adding continuous charity in Islam to your giving lets you build a legacy alongside meeting urgent needs.

Sadaqah Jariyah Examples from the Sunnah

The Prophet (PBUH) gave us clear guidance on what this kind of charity can look like. In a hadith reported by Ibn Majah, he listed deeds whose reward reaches a believer after death:

“Knowledge he taught and spread, a righteous child he left behind, a copy of the Qur’an he left as inheritance, a mosque he built, a house he built for travellers, a stream he made to flow, or charity he gave from his wealth while he was alive and in good health. These will reach him after his death.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 242)

This hadith gives us a strong starting list of Sadaqah Jariyah examples.

The Well of Sa’d ibn Ubadah

When the mother of the companion Sa’d ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with them) passed away, he asked the Prophet (PBUH) which charity was best. The Prophet replied: water.

So Sa’d dug a well and dedicated it to his mother. (Sunan Abu Dawud 1681)

This story is why water projects remain one of the most loved forms of Sadaqah Jariyah today.

The Endowment of Umar ibn al-Khattab

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) received valuable land in Khaybar. He asked the Prophet (PBUH) what to do with it.

The Prophet advised him to keep the land itself and give its produce in charity. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2737, Sahih Muslim 1632)

This became the model for waqf, an Islamic endowment where an asset is preserved and its benefits are shared forever.

Planting Trees

The Prophet (PBUH) said that whenever a Muslim plants a tree and a person, bird or animal eats from it, it is counted as charity for him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2320, Sahih Muslim 1553)

A single tree can provide food, shade and income for decades.

What Counts as Sadaqah Jariyah Today?

You might be wondering what counts as Sadaqah Jariyah in the modern world. The principles from the Sunnah still apply. What matters is that the benefit continues.

Here are some of the most common forms today.

1. Water Projects

Clean water saves lives. A well, hand pump or water system can serve families, schools and clinics for years.

Clean water also reduces disease, frees children (often girls) from long walks to collect water, and supports farming.

2. Education

Every child taught to read, every student supported through school, and every teacher trained creates a ripple effect. That knowledge is passed on to others.

Supporting schools, classrooms, learning materials and scholarships are all strong options.

3. Mosques and Community Centres

A mosque is a place of prayer, learning and community. Every prayer offered there and every lesson taught can bring reward to those who helped build it.

4. Copies of the Qur’an and Islamic Learning

Donating copies of the Qur’an, or supporting Qur’an teachers and Islamic study programs, spreads beneficial knowledge that keeps being used.

5. Orphan Sponsorship

Sponsoring an orphan gives a child stability, education and care. A well-supported child can grow into an adult who supports their own family and community.

6. Livelihood Projects

Giving a family the tools to earn an income helps them escape poverty for good. This could mean livestock, sewing machines, farming equipment or small business support.

It’s the difference between giving a meal and giving the means to provide many meals.

7. Healthcare Facilities

Funding clinics, medical equipment or ambulances supports the health of a whole community. Each patient treated adds to the ongoing benefit.

8. Tree Planting and Agriculture

Fruit trees and farming projects provide food, protect the environment and create income, just as the Prophet (PBUH) described.

How Does Sadaqah Jariyah Work?

So how does Sadaqah Jariyah work in practice? It comes down to three key elements.

Sincere Intention

Like all good deeds, Sadaqah Jariyah begins with intention (niyyah). The Prophet (PBUH) taught that actions are judged by intentions. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1)

Give sincerely, for the sake of Allah, and not for praise or recognition.

Lasting Benefit

The project must keep helping people after it’s completed. The longer and wider its benefit, the more it continues to work as Sadaqah Jariyah.

Ongoing Reward

As long as people benefit, the reward continues to flow to the giver. Every glass of water drawn from a well, every lesson learned in a classroom, and every prayer in a mosque adds to it, by the will of Allah.

Giving on Behalf of Others

You can also give Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of someone else, including a parent, grandparent or loved one who has passed away. The story of Sa’d ibn Ubadah’s well is the clearest example from the Sunnah.

This makes Sadaqah Jariyah a meaningful way to honour someone you love.

Ongoing Charity After Death: Building Your Legacy

None of us knows how long we have. That’s why many Muslims see Sadaqah Jariyah as one of the most important investments they can make.

Ongoing charity after death works in two ways.

First, for yourself. Charity you set up during your lifetime can keep earning reward after you’ve gone. The Prophet (PBUH) specifically mentioned charity given “while alive and in good health,” which encourages us not to delay.

Second, for loved ones who have passed. You can give in the name of a parent, spouse, child or friend. It’s a way to keep their name connected to goodness and to keep supporting them through du’a and charity.

Some people also include Sadaqah Jariyah in their Islamic will (wasiyyah). In Islamic law, a person may bequeath up to one-third of their estate to causes outside the fixed inheritance shares. Speak to a qualified scholar or Islamic estate planner to get this right.

How to Choose the Right Sadaqah Jariyah Project

With so many options, it can help to narrow things down. Here are a few practical tips.

Think about the need

Water, education and livelihoods tackle the root causes of poverty. Ask which needs matter most to you.

Consider the lifespan

Some projects last for decades. Look for projects designed to be durable and well maintained.

Choose a trusted charity

Make sure the organization is a registered charity, reports transparently and works closely with local communities. In Canada, you can check a charity’s registration with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Give what you can

You don’t need to fund an entire well alone. Many charities let you contribute to a larger project, and every share counts.

Make it personal

Dedicating a project to a loved one can make your giving even more meaningful for you and your family.
