The Humanitarian Situation in Lebanon
Economic Instability
Lebanon’s precarious economic situation has not improved in recent times. The Lebanese Pound has sunk to historic lows, and inflation rates have skyrocketed to 190% recently. The government has been unable to respond adequately to these stresses, resulting in a significant reduction in purchasing power, even for basic necessities.
These factors have driven people to poverty, including households with multiple streams of income. Access to public services has become increasingly more difficult, with private services being completely unaffordable for many. Access to healthcare has resulted in increases of disease and sickness as families struggle to afford treatment and medication. The healthcare system in Lebanon is near collapse as increased costs of imported medical supplies and medication increase, rendering it unable to handle these challenges.
Food Security
Food insecurity remains a pressing concern in Lebanon, with millions of people struggling to access nutritious meals on a daily basis. A number of vulnerable communities in the country are particularly being affected by the current situation. Among them, Syrian refugees, Palestinian refugees, women and children are facing high levels of food insecurity. The state of the economy remains a key factor in people’s ability to gain access to food, but is also compounded by recent cross border conflict, as well as political instability. A devalued currency, alongside the inability of the economy to grow and sustain a high employment rate has left many to become susceptible to hunger and malnutrition.
Lebanon Port Explosion
On August 4, 2020, a large explosion occurred in Lebanon’s capital city, at the Port of Beirut. The large explosion shook the entire city, sending seismic waves across the region equivalent to a 3.3 magnitude Earthquake. It destroyed a section of shoreline and left behind a crater nearly 120 metre in diameter. The Explosion killed 218 people with more than 6,000 people suffering various degrees of injury, some life altering. 300,000 people were left homeless. The explosion also caused billions of dollars in damage to property and infrastructure. About 15,000 tons of grain were destroyed, leaving the country with less than a month’s worth of grain in reserve. This explosion occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic where medical resources were already stressed, overwhelming medical facilities that were experiencing supply shortages and were not able to pay hospital staff.
Lebanon’s Water Security
Water security is another critical issue facing Lebanon, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure, pollution, and water scarcity. The country’s access to clean water, along with infrastructure inadequacies led to a severe crisis that could have resulted in more than 4 million people losing access to water in 2021. Low rainfall, coupled with an influx of Syrian refugees have increased demand with existing infrastructure that has not kept up with required expansion and maintenance. As a result, the risk of waterborne disease has gone up significantly, along with the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases. An already stressed healthcare system that is near collapse has been unable to keep up with the number of patients that have been inflicted with these illnesses.
Your Impact in Lebanon
With your donation to Lebanon through Penny Appeal Canada, we have been able to undergo a number of projects to help those in need during this looming crisis. As the scale of need grows, we encourage a Lebanon donation so we can expand our projects in the country to provide relief to more beneficiaries.
Port of Beirut Explosion Emergency Response
Penny Appeal Canada launched an Emergency Response to this event by providing essential needs to those who suffered this enormous event. We were able to supply families with food and shelter support, along with much needed essential medical supplies to hospitals. With your generosity we distributed 1,354 food parcels that contained provisions of lentils, cheese, hummus, and more, to families with households of 4-5 in the suburbs of Beirut and surrounding areas. Over 9,000 beneficiaries were helped. Shelter assistance was provided to 25 displaced families who had 4-5 family members, by providing them with 3 months of rent in their new temporary accommodations.
Food Distributions
Penny Appeal Canada has used your generosity to conduct a number of food distributions inside the country to those vulnerable to food insecurity. Among them were at the Ein El Helwi, after clashes broke out in the refugee camp that was home to thousands of Palestinian refugees. An estimated 20,000 people, including 12,000 children were forced from their homes to seek shelter elsewhere. 161 food parcels were handed out to families containing a provision of healthy food essentials to a total of 684 beneficiaries. Sleeping mattresses were also procured and distributed to these families.
Foodpacks were also distributed during Ramadan through Penny Appeal’s Feed Our World program. During the month of Ramadan, 675 foodpacks were distributed that contained provisions of dates, chickpeas, flour, cooking oil, and more, for families to prepare meals. 3,375 beneficiaries received these foodpacks.
Capacity Building
Penny Appeal Canada launched a capacity building initiative by providing vocational training to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. With mainly youth and women participation, these people received training in dairy products, food drying, and handicrafts, supplemented by shopkeeping and financial literacy training. The aim of this project was to help 200 Palestinian beneficiaries set up their own businesses in the Saida region of South Lebanon.
Penny Appeal is also providing support to 25 marginalised women in the Saida region through hands-on training on the use of the sewing kits and program-provided sewing machines to start earning livelihoods.
Winter Relief
Due to the harsh winters in some regions of Lebanon, Penny Appeal distributed Winter kits to vulnerable Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian refugees in the Saida, Arsal, Beqaa Valley and Akkar region. These winter kits included winter blankets and clothing, heating oil, hygiene kits, and provisions of hot food. More than 230 families and households were direct beneficiaries of this project.
