The Scale of Devastation
The Largest Earthquake in 120 Years
In September of 2023, Morocco was hit with a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake, affecting more than 6 million people. With the epicentre in the High Atlas Mountains about 70km near the populated city of Marrakesh, both rural and urban residents were subjected to the devastation of the initial earthquake. Subsequent aftershocks, which numbered in the hundreds, drove people to sleep on the streets for fear of buildings collapsing on top of them. Sadly 3,000 people lost their lives with more than 350,000 people without homes. This was the largest earthquake to hit Morocco in 120 years. Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria.

Exacerbating Circumstances
Months later, the people of Morocco are still recovering from the devastation. Vital infrastructure such as hospitals and major roads, as well as water and sewage pipes remain in disrepair. This damage has affected the livelihoods of thousands of people who are not able to provide for their families. Schools have been completely destroyed forcing many children to delay or completely quit their education. Levels of poverty among the rural population, who already faced difficult circumstances, have only increased as a result of this natural disaster.
Relief Efforts When you Donate to Morocco
Penny Appeal Canada was quick to act. Along with launching an immediate Morocco emergency fundraising effort across Canada, Penny Appeal sent a team to the country to begin relief efforts. Working with trusted partners on the ground who were able to help navigate procurement and logistics, we were able to provide people with essential relief items.
Your generous donations helped us procure items for food packs which included flour, oil, sugar, salt, and more. Winter relief kits included jackets and boots. Mattresses were also provided to beneficiaries so that they did not have to sleep on the cold ground.

Donor Impact in Morocco
Penny Appeal focused on three rural areas: Moulay Brahim, Asini, and Amazmiz. These areas were hard hit due to their proximity to the epicentre and level of need required by people. Rural areas are often hit the hardest where homes, buildings, and structures may not have the same integrity as in urban centres.
Our distribution has been able to reach more than 3,200 beneficiaries in these areas. Hundreds of blankets, mattresses, and winter clothes were distributed, alongside robust food packs that have been able to feed families.
Your donations have provided a lifeline for these families at a time where it was difficult for aid workers to reach them, due to the scale of devastation this earthquake caused.
