The Humanitarian Situation in Nepal
Nepal Earthquakes and Natural Disasters
The government of Nepal recorded nearly 22,000 instances of seismic activity of various magnitudes from the period between 2019-2024. The most recent large earthquakes occurred on November 3, 2023, taking the lives of 153 people and destroying more than 60,000 buildings. The earthquake also displaced 6,000 households. Months after, the aftermath of these quakes continues to affect the daily lives of people, many of whom live in impoverished conditions, unable to meet basic daily needs. This situation has been compounded by changes in rainfall patterns, causing widespread drought and landslides in different parts of the country. Agricultural drought has had a detrimental effect on crop yield, with periodic crop failures of varying degrees, affecting the livelihoods of farmers.
Food Insecurity
Food insecurity remains an on-going concern in Nepal, with millions of people struggling to access nutritious meals on a daily basis. Approximately 4.3 million people are facing some level of food insecurity, due to natural disasters or economic reasons. Drought and damage to crops and farmland has exacerbated the availability of foods and food production across the country Vulnerable communities, including women, children, and marginalised groups, are particularly affected. Malnutrition has factored into the health of children where 36% of children under 5 are stunted as a direct result of food insecurity.
Water Security
Nepal’s state of underdevelopment has posed significant challenges in terms of water security in the country. Despite having more than 6,000 rivers flowing throughout the country, inadequate infrastructure, pollution, and natural disasters have made the access to safe, clean water difficult. Lack of access and poor hygiene has raised concerns about the spread of disease, as well as the spread of waterborne disease in particular during times of flooding. The healthcare system in Nepal frequently experiences times of stress as large numbers of patients utilize an overburdened healthcare system. Many are not able to afford treatment, leading to long-term illness, and even death.
Your Impact in Nepal
Education First
Penny Appeal Canada rehabilitated schools in the Gaur and Ishnath municipalities of Rautahat district, increasing the access to education of 140 marginalised girls. This project renovated the schools, including improving sanitation in the girls washroom, provided desks and bookshelves, and built a fence around the perimeter of the school. This program also provided vocational training to women to help set up small businesses to earn a livelihood and provide for their families. Your donation to Nepal was a vital part of procuring the necessary supplies, items, and training materials required to execute this project.
Water Security – WASH Project
Penny Appeal Canada worked to improve water security, sanitation, hygiene, and community health in Durga Bhagwati Rural Municipality of Nepal. This project aimed to increase access to safe and quality drinking water for the needy and marginalised people in this area. Thanks to your donations, we were able to install three WASH facilities for community use, a school, and healthcare facility, 20 working toilets for marginalised households, a shallow tube well for the school, rehabilitation of existing washrooms for girls, and a WASH awareness campaign for the community. Over 5,000 people benefited from this project.
