Your Charity Counts with Penny Appeal
Penny Appeal has been actively involved in providing humanitarian assistance of various kinds to the people of Pakistan. Ongoing natural disasters driven by climate change have made conditions in the country acute, with further exacerbations by socio-economic and political challenges. Your donation to Pakistan is crucial in delivering vital aid to those affected by these conditions.
Pakistan’s Humanitarian Crisis
Food Security in Pakistan
One of the primary concerns in Pakistan is food security. 37% of the Pakistani population suffers from some level of food insecurity. A staggering one out of every three people are affected by malnutrition, undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and being underweight. Women and children, as well as minority communities are especially at risk. 13% of entire households are currently food insecure, with estimates predicting that number to go up significantly in the next five years. The country also ranks amongst the worst on the Global Hunger Index. Pakistan charities along with other international agencies have warned about the hunger crisis in the country, urging the international community to act. Your donation to Pakistan will support efforts to provide essential food assistance to those in need, ensuring that beneficiaries have access to adequate nutritional meals
Water Security Concerns
The 2002 floods have only exacerbated existing water security concerns driven by climate change and inadequate infrastructure. Previous to the massive floods, in 2020-2021, many parts of Pakistan experienced high temperatures, and drought conditions especially in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan. With the arrival of sudden, heavy rain, ground and soil conditions were unable to absorb the large volume of water, resulting in widespread flooding. As a result, the spread of waterborne diseases has risen. More than 650,000 people have reported cases of cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, dysentery, hepatitis A, and skin infections. Vulnerable populations such as women, children, and the elderly have especially been affected. Flooding of rivers and melting of glaciers due to climate change have also negatively contributed to the deterioration of vital water infrastructure that are supposed to provide people with clean water.
Pakistan’s Climate Change Situation
Despite producing less than 1% of the world’s carbon footprint, Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate disasters is one of the highest in the world. In 2002, the country faced torrential monsoon rains, particularly in the provinces of Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhroonkha (KPK). The consequences were devastating, resulting in 33 million people being directly affected, with more than 1,700 people losing their lives, and 13,000 people being injured. The flood left millions of acres of crop and farmland destroyed, resulted in either widespread displacement of people or clusters of the population trapped on high ground, surrounded by floodwater, unable to escape with access to food or clean water. International agencies called for urgent Pakistan flood relief efforts and to rally around charity and humanitarian organisations as the government struggled with the response due to the scale of the disaste.
Internal Displacement
Internal displacement and migration, driven by poor economic conditions, natural disasters, and environmental degradation, have further complicated the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes due to safety concerns and lack of even basic necessities. The population shift from rural or urban centres has increased, putting a strain on already stretched municipal resources. Additionally, many of these migrants have arrived in urban centres with little to no possessions or money, leaving them in need of essential items to survive. Many find it difficult to find employment to provide for their families and shelter to house them.
The Impact of your Donation to Pakistan
When you donate to Pakistan through Penny Appeal Canada, you will support efforts to support those who have been affected by circumstances beyond their control.
Your donation to Pakistan has been vital to our flood relief response. Our relief efforts occurred in Punjab, KPK, Balochistan, and Sindh. Through your donations, Penny Appeal Canada was able to:
Distribute 14,988 food packs
Distribute 9,300 Hygiene Kits
Distribute 620 families with tent shelters
Distributed 4 cooked meals a day to 7,500 individuals
Distributed Livestock fodder benefiting 2,800 livestock and 4,900 people.
Rehabilitated 18 homes
Over 20,000 beneficiaries have received relief during this phase of our emergency response. This emergency response is on-going as long term efforts are still needed to address the needs of thousands of more victims of the floods. Your donations are playing a crucial role in the rebuilding efforts that we are undertaking.
Through Penny Appeal’s Feed Our World Program, communities in Pakistan are receiving food relief in various ways.
During the month of Ramadan, families receive food packs with healthy provisions of nutritious meals to break their fast as sunset. These foodpacks are distributed in various parts of Pakistan and contain such items as flour, basmati rice, daal moong, daal chana, dates, and other items. Over 3,400 people receive these food packs every year during this time.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Penny Appeal distributes food packs across various parts of the country to needy families that may not have the resources to celebrate the occasion. Beneficiaries from such demographics as pregnant and breastfeeding women, day laborours, low-income workers, and families with five or more dependent children, are given provisions of healthy ingredients such as lentils, dates, flour, and spices. More than 4,200 beneficiaries are able to take advantage of this distribution. Your donation to the Feed Our World program ensures that more of these distributions take place in Pakistan, as the country continues to grapple with malnutrition and food insecurity.
Penny Appeal Canada has undertaken a number of vital water projects in various parts of Pakistan in order to alleviate water insecurity concerns among the people of Pakistan. These projects not only help individuals, but entire communities gain safe access to clean water, reducing cases of waterborne diseases. Your donations to Pakistan help us expand our beneficiary reach so that we can help more people gain safe access to clean water for drinking and hygiene.
Through our Thirst Relief program, Penny Appeal Canada has installed water wells across the country in communities where existing water wells were either inactive, or where none had existed before. We also provide training to selected caretakers to maintain upkeep after the well has been constructed. More than 30,000 beneficiaries have benefited from these wells so far.
Penny Appeal has facilitated the construction of a number of water filtration plants across Pakistan. Much of the water available for usage typically contains contaminants. Contaminants including heavy metals like lead, chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, microbiological contaminants such as bacteria, giardia and cryptosporidium, organic & in-organic matter all can be present. These contaminants have serious health related consequences. Water filtration plants ensure those accessing water for drinking, hygiene, and cooking, are accessing water free of these contaminants. Installation of these plants have included rural communities, urban centres, and hospitals. Thousands of people have benefited from these plants.
Solar power water centres are innovative ways to bring underground water to a surface level water tank for easy and constant access. Energy from the Sun is harnessed to pull water up filling up the surface tank in a matter of a few hours. When the water level in the tank drops to a certain level, the water centre refills the tank automatically, ensuring beneficiaries always have water available. Penny Appeal has constructed eight solar power water centres in the province of Sindh, benefiting thousands of people from the Tharparkar region and surrounding area. With your donations to Pakistan, Penny Appeal plans to expand similar projects around Pakistan.
