The Magnitude of the Crisis
Numbers Tell a Story
On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern region of Turkey. This was followed by another 7.5 magnitude earthquake soon after, along with many powerful aftershocks.
The deadly earthquake in Turkey has led to an acute humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people and resulting in significant loss of life and property. Current reports estimate that 55,000 people have been killed. Additionally, over 100,000 people were injured, many incuring life altering injuries.
Damage to infrastructure was immense. According to reports, 37,000 buildings collapsed and over 200,000 buildings incurred extensive damage, with many of them being rendered as unsafe. Damage to vital infrastructure including hospitals, medical clinics, roads, and water pipes, made treating the injured extremely difficult.

Your Donations to Turkey Can Go a Long Way
The nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the earthquake. Rebuilding efforts have begun to take place but more needs to be done. Thousands of people still remain displaced. Homelessness still remains a large concern, especially with the Syrian refugee population, which has sought to escape violence in their home country. Many hospitals still remain damaged or lack the necessary equipment to provide care at their facilities.
Economic conditions have exacerbated the situation. Rates of inflation have made basic necessities for many victims.

Earthquake Fears in Turkey Continue
Waiting for “The Big One”
Turkey is situated in a region of the world that is vulnerable to many earthquakes. Europe’s most populous city, Istanbul, lies close to the North Anatolia faultline, and has experienced 34 cases of strong earthquakes over a period of 2,000 years. Just in the last 100 years, Turkey has experienced 13 earthquakes, taking the lives of 1,000 people. In the last 30 years, the country has faced two of the costliest earthquakes in the entire world.
These periodic earthquakes not only affect the vital infrastructure of the country, but also pose a serious risk to the residents. Future fears of loss of shelter and possessions, displacement, and disruption of access to clean drinking water, food, and health services remain in the back of people’s minds. Rural populations, where buildings may not fully comply with regulations, run the risk of collapsing, causing serious injury or death to millions of people. Although urban transformation as it relates to earthquake resilience is taking place, rural areas have yet to see these efforts take place.
