The Humanitarian Situation in Zimbabwe
Climate Change in Zimbabwe
Natural disasters, including floods and droughts in the region have been amplified by El-Niño. Inducing far more severe drought conditions, Zimbabwe has been experiencing abnormally high and historic dry seasons, coupled with high temperatures. Other parts of the country have experienced high rainfall and flooding, destroying vital infrastructure and wiping out crops, destroying livestock, and damaging farm land.
Water Insecurity and the Spread of Disease
The El-Niño cycle has significantly contributed to the lack of available clean water in the country. Significant decrease in rainfall, coupled with poor water and sanitation infrastructure has contributed to a widespread outbreak of disease. Cholera, measles and diarrhoea, COVID-19 have had a dire effect on the population, particularly in children under the age of 5. An overburdened and under funded healthcare system has not been able to cope with the large amount of sickness entering its doors. More than 860,000 people in Zimbabwe do not have access to safe drinking water. 17% of households are forced to fetch water more than 1 km away from their homes.
Food Security Concerns
The climate induced challenges have resulted in people all across the country facing food scarcity. With many failed harvests and total crop failures from drought or flooding, have significantly raised the prices of food and other commodities, leaving many families unable to provide adequate levels of nutrition to their diets. More than 18,000 children in Zimbabwe are experiencing severe wasting and require treatment.

Penny Appeal’s Response:
Penny Appeal Canada’s Feed Our World program has taken an active role in addressing the food security needs of beneficiaries in Zimbabwe during Ramadan and Dhul-Hijjah.
Pre-Ramadan food packs are distributed to identified beneficiaries that provide families with Iftaar and Sahoor meals for the entirety of Ramadan. These food packs contain healthy provisions of such items as flour, mixed vegetables, meat, rice, and other cooking essentials. More than 200 families benefit from his distribution.
Qurbani is a significant time during the Islamic calendar and is a special occasion for many families who struggle to make ends meet. It is often the only time of year where they are able to have meat. Penny Appeal Canada provides provisions of meat to beneficiaries to enjoy on this occasion. We procure the livestock, perform the slaughter and cutting of the meat, and distribute it to in-need families. Your donations to Zimbabwe helped more than 3,100 vulnerable families with meat, along with other food and cooking items.
