A major earthquake has struck Myanmar and surrounding regions, injuring hundreds of people. Sadly, over 1600 people have lost their lives. We have deployed an emergency response to help deliver humanitarian aid.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s north central region on Friday that has injured at least 700 people. A powerful 6.4 magnitude aftershock also hit, causing further injuries and damage. Sadly more than 1600 people have lost their lives.
Tremors were also felt in neighboring Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed. At least 140 people lost their lives there. Reports of tremors were felt as far away as China.
Buildings have collapsed and people have lost their homes. Hospitals have suffered serious damage as they try to treat the injured. The government has called on the international community for aid in light of the devastation.
